A New Life of a Legendary Clipper

I. Read the text.

"This ship has been through many things. She's over 100 years old. She's been through recessions, storms, hurricanes. She's been battling all her life. She's not dead yet, far from it."

The Cutty Sark, a London landmark and the world's last surviving 19th century tea clipper, was severely damaged in a blaze on 21 May 2007. Built at Dumbarton on the Clyde, The Cutty Sark was originally built to carry tea from China. At the time of her launch in 1869 she was the most advanced vessel in existence. The Cutty Sark left London on its maiden voyage on 16 February 1870, sailing around The Cape of Good Hope to Shanghai in three-and-a-half months. She made eight journeys to China as part of tea trade until steam ships replaced sail on the high seas. In a single voyage she

could carry more than 1.3 million pounds of tea - enough to make 200 million cups -but she would also transport coal and wool. Built for tea trade, she switched to fetching wool from Australia to feed England's mills when the advent of reliable steamships spelt the end of the age of the sailing clippers. On the Australia to Britain route the ship regularly recorded the fastest time for the voyage. The ship was later used for training naval cadets during World War II, and in 1951 was moored in London for the Festival of Britain. Although only built to have a working life of 30 years, she continued operating until 1922 when she was returned to London. In 1954 she was put on public display after being floated into the dry dock in Greenwich.

At the end of April 2012 the world's last remaining and best-known tea clipper, The Cutty Sark, will open to the public for the first time since she was almost destroyed by fire. An industrial vacuum cleaner which was left switched on led to the fire, which caused damage estimated at £10m. In total,

the restoration has cost more than £50m. The fire burned through each of the ship's three decks, destroying all the building work structures and tools onboard. The Cutty Sark Trust say just two per cent of the original material from the ship was lost in the fire. Around 1,400 cubic feet of 19th century Indian teak reclaimed from an old building and 565 cubic feet of larch were used to repair and replace damaged wood. Difficulties in getting hold of the rare old growth teak needed to replace the top deck meant the conservation teams had to resort to creating a special composite material that looked like the real deck. The ship's figurehead - the witch Nannie Dee - has also been restored while the original brass fittings, including the port holes, have been cleaned and polished before being refixed. In December last year the masts were reattached and the rigging has also now been reinstated. Speaking as French polishers were putting the final touches to the woodwork on board the vessel, Richard Doughty, director of the Cutty Sark Trust, said: 'Although we have taken The Cutty Sark apart and reassembled it almost entirely, this is very much still the original Cutty Sark. This has been a conservation project to arrest the decay and preserve the Cutty Sark for future generations."
