"XV CONGRESS of International Sociological association. Tentative results" features three contributions by Russian participants of the 2002 congress. N.E. Pokrovski dwells on the fate of modernization theory, declining social role of sociology, new posture of sociologists from Latin America, Asia and South Africa, as well as specifics of Russian sociologists' appearance at the event. V.P. Kultygin gives a generalized assessment of the academic event focusing on theoretical and methodological specifics of the congress as reflected in key accents made by prominent participants in respective reports (Martinelli, Domingues, Touraine, Archer e.a.). Conspicuous details of congress organization are mentioned as well. S.A. Kravchen-ko compares Brisbane congress to the previous one in Montreal summarizing his observations in ten positions ranging from sociological theory and methodology to the fact of widening geography of world sociological forums.

"Women and men as top-managers of Russian companies" (by Alia Tshirikova) analyses specifics of male and female management in directing enterprises. Special attention is paid to proving basic thesis: successful management has no gender. Reviewing patterns of the private life of women top managers the article shows that successful leaders do not normally sacrifice their family life for the sake of work, but find strategies permitting to preserve and enrich family relations. Information base for the article is formed by in-depth interviews with 72 men and women directors, as well as with over 90 members of their teams, - a base allowing to analyze not only differences in male vs. female management, but also to assess space of coincidence. In-depth interviews are complemented by test studies of directors (men and women) and their team members in order to analyze specifics of leadership styles. Test studies have once again proved that there should be no stereotyped assessments of female leadership for it is occasionally shaped according to other patterns, no less effective then those of men.

"Game situations in sociology teaching" (by Svetlana Sharonova) looks back at experiences with the well-known method of game situations to develop interest for studying sociology (both as science and academic discipline) with the students. Author's focus is on practical lessons as the site of basic game actions. Technological aspect of the method in question is duly accentuated. Using author's own experiences in training lessons description of a set of interdependent procedural scenarios is offered: entering game situation, or situation of interpersonal relationship, situation of research object, defining the topic of study, its organization, results etc. Using this method, so Sharonova, one might transform acquisition of sociological knowledge into personal attitude of students involved.

"What identity do St.-Petersburg inhabitants display?" (by Marina Rabzhaeva and Vadim Semenkov) discusses social meaning of names and self-description of the city variously called in different times "Saint-Petersburg", "Leningrad", "Petrograd", as well as the reasons for its re-naming. The present name of "Saint-Petersburg" emerged as a result of renaming the city of Leningrad in 1991. Yet many city dwellers and people from other regions still call the city Leningrad and its inhabitants Leningraders. The authors explain the paradox by the fact that this name has historically come to be dominant in the minds of present generations and in everyday life associated with blockade of Leningrad during WWII, that is it had acquired certain social meaning. Renaming Leningrad to Saint-Petersburg, so the authors, is a product of manipulation in the wake of USSR disintegration. New (Petersburger) identity has failed so far to take shape due to lacking "attractiveness" of non-democratic elite-styled "Petersburger" image among the city-dwellers settled in the city after the war, as well as due to other reasons.

"Concept of youth socialization: norms, deviation, socializing trajectory" (by Antonina Kovaliova) is based on decade-long individual and collective research, which in sum permits the author to postulate certain innovative concepts and notions in the field of youth studies. This is, first of all, a concept of socialization norm. On the societal level this norm might be arguably seen as a sum total of rules for translating social norms and cultural values from generation to generation. Then, this is typology of socialization processes and a characteristic of deviating socialization. Finally, this is specifics and trajectory model for youth socialization. Socialization trajectory, so Kovaliova, might be academically considered as an integral indicator permitting to grasp crucial objective and subjective aspects of youth socialization process making.

" Mentality and national character" (by Nelli Moisseeva and Valentina Sorokovikova) presents their contribution to the ongoing debate (in our journal) on mentality, or national character of Russians. In their opinion, approaches to this issue by some participants in the debate are clearly insufficient from the point of view of contemporary scholarship and due to lack of interdisciplinary analysis. To fill the gap authors assert to eventually involve into the debate findings of social anthropologists, cultural studies, and studies of national characters to reflect 'basis personality' and 'modal personality' notions. Cross-cultural studies, applied cultural studies and social linguistics are also seen fruitful in this context. It is high time in authors' opinion for Russian sociologists and other social scientists to start debating the issues of Russian national character from truly up-to-date scholarly positions.
