BOOKS IN OUR LIFE"

TIME-MACHINE" ("BOOKS THROUGH CENTURIES")

Teacher (T): Today we are going to speak about one of the most wonderful things in the world. Well, try to guess what it is!

It has no mouth but speaks.

It is not a tree but it has leaves.

It is not alive but it can be a good friend.

... Right! It is a book!

A wise man said, "Life without books is as a tree without leaves". How can we understand this quotation?

Pupil1 (P1): I think life without books looks as poor and unhappy as a tree without leaves.

P2: I'm sure that if we don't have books in our life, it will be as boring and gloomy as trees in autumn.

T: I agree with you. Now let us grow our "book tree".

Vocabulary list: autobiography, biography, adventure story, detective story, fairy tale, fantasy, historical story (novel), horror story, humorous story, ghost story, love story, a legend, a myth, fiction, science fiction, travel story, true (life) story, poetry, a dictionary, an encyclopedia, a reference book, a textbook.

T: What kind of stories do you enjoy most? I am fond of fantasies, and one of my favourite books is "The Lord of the Rings". And you?

P3: Actually, I am fond of fantasies too, and also I like legends. I enjoy legends about Robin Hood most of all, they are cool and funny. Etc.

T: Now, let's have a guessing game. Listen to the beginnings of different kinds of stories and try to guess what story it is, and why you think so.

Tapescript

1. It was a dark and foggy night. We drove and drove. At midnight, just as we thought we were lost, we saw a light behind some trees. As we got nearer, we could see a house. It looked deserted, abandoned. We knocked on the heavy, wooden door. It opened slowly. A tall man dressed entirely in black stood there. "Good evening," he said in a slow, deep voice. "I've been expecting you."

2. We were travelling through deep space at the speed of light. Suddenly, the spaceship slowed down and immediately the system came into view. A bright star with twenty or more planets. One of these would be our new home, five light years from our own galaxy.

3. One of my earliest memories is of my father running along the beach with our dog, Tess. I must have been about three years old. I remember the dog jumping up on me and knocking me over into the water.

4. The man lay on the ground next to a white van. There was no doubt. He was dead. I quickly looked in the pockets of his jacket -some money, a handkerchief and a theatre

ticket with a Chicago phone number written on it. Three murders in three weeks and the victims all killed in the same way.

5. Once upon a time, a long, long time ago, there lived a beautiful princess. She was an only child and her father and mother, the king and queen, loved her very much. One day, an old woman came to the castle. When she saw the princess, she smiled and laughed in a strange and horrible way.

Answers

1) horror story; 2) science fiction; 3) true story; 4) detective story; 5) fairy story.

(Pupils look at the "book tree" as they listen to the tape. When checking pupils' answers, there may be disagreement, then encourage pupils to argue their point of view.)

T: Now, imagine, please, that you are reporters who have been asked to research books people prefer to read. Ask some pupils questions and be ready to tell the editor of your newspaper about the results of your research.

(Pupils are given cards with possible questions; they may add their own ones if they like.)

An example of a question card:

1) What types of books are you fond of reading?

2) How many books do you read a month?

3) What was the last book you read? What was it about?

4) What is the best book you've ever read? Why?

5) Have you read any books in English? Which ones?

6) What stories or books did you enjoy when you were a child?

7) Do you like legends? What is your favourite legend from your country?

(Pupils ask each other questions, then they tell "the editor" and their "colleagues" about the results of their research.)

A Game "I'm a great detective!"

The Frog Princess (a fairy-tale), J.R.R. Tolkien "The Lord of the Rings", Ch. Perraut "Cinderella", A. Volkov "The Wizard of the Emerald City", C.S. Lewis "The Chronicles of Narnia", Philip Pullman "A Wonderful Knife", Brian Jacques "Redwall", Eoin Colfer "Artemis Fowl", J.K. Rowling "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone", A.A. Milne "Winny-the-Pooh".

This book is written by an English writer in the 20th century. It describes the adventures of two brothers and two sisters in an imaginary country. One of the main characters is a Great Lion who lives in this country and can do magic. At first the action takes place in England in 1940s or 1950s, I think. And in the beginning the author describes the children and explains how they get to the magic country. From the book we learn that true love and friendship can do miracles. I'm sure the book is worth reading. So, what is the title of the book? ("The Chronicles of Narnia").

"A Great Proverb Mystery" Game.

A Proverb List for the Game:

Bad books are worse than useless They are harmful

The person who doesn't read Has no advantage over the person who can not

There is no friend So faithful as a good book

Choose an author As you choose a friend

Don't judge a book By its cover

A room without books is Like a body without a soul

Reading is to the mind What exercise is to the body

We are What we read

Tell me what you read And I will tell you what you are

Books are a great thing As long as you know how to use them

"The Best Manager" Game.

"You work as a manager for a famous Bloomsbury Publishing House in G.B. You are going to discuss the list of the books to be published next month. The problem is that only 5 (7) books can be published. You need to convince the owner to publish the book you suggest. Managers, whose suggestions will be accepted, will be given a promotion".

Don't forget to tell about:

- the writer, the title of the book

- the content of the book in brief

- the style and the language

- why the book will be interesting for readers (what about the age?)

You have two-three minutes for your

speech.

"The Reader's Conference" Role Playing Game.

The writer gives an interview in a local library for the members of the Book Lovers Society and some people from TV.

The "hostess" (one of the members of the Society) meets the writer and the TV people at the door, asks them to come in and make themselves comfortable, offers them a cup of coffee and they begin to talk.

The writer is working on a new fantasy novel. When he was young, he was a fishing inspector, a hydrobiologist, a photographer and an editor. He wrote his first books while he was still working as a biologist in the Caribbean.

Here are some questions people can ask him:

- Why did you make up your mind to be a writer?

- How did you manage to find time for writing books?

- What kind of people did you meet during your daily rounds?

- What is especially interesting in a writer's life?

- What does the success of a book depend upon?

- What progress are you making with your new book? What will it be about?

- Do you find it necessary to plan your working hours and follow a strict timetable?

- Do you have time for hobbies? Etc
