- "A summer story for a teen magazine contest", "I'm a TV director", "A file on Britain", "Spooky stories" - VI класс;

- "The school I'd like to study at", "Let's make the world a better place", "People I'm proud of", "Problems that trouble me" - VII класс;

- "The places I'd like to show to my foreign friends", "What's better: to play sport or to watch it?" - VIII

Мне бы хотелось рассказать о подготовке учащихся VIII классов, которые защищали свои проекты по теме "The British holidays, festivals and traditions".

По ходу этой работы мне, как организатору и координатору, приходилось оказывать помощь ученикам - подбор материала (альманах "YOUngster", журнал "Speak Out!", сайт в Интернете www.5ballov.ru), использование книг из своей личной библиотеки ("Read and Speak about Britain and the British" by V.F. Satinova; "British festivals" by I.I. Burova).

(Pearly Kings and Queens of London)

В то время, когда проводилась викторина для болельщиков, жюри оценивало выступление проектных групп по следующим критериям: "The most informative report", "The most unusual presentation", "The best project presenter(s)", "The most interesting project" и "The best project of all including all these criteria".

British Holidays, Festivals, Traditions" Guy Fawkes Night

TV Presenter: Hello, I'm Mary Mironova. You're with British Culture, the most exciting programme on SKY TV. Today we're going to talk with two interesting people who are specialists on British holidays and traditions. Their names are Alice and Natalie; they're in our studio now. Hello, Alice and Natalie.

Girls: Hello, Mary.

TV Presenter: What holiday would you like to tell us about?

Alice: We'd like to tell you about a special day in Britain which is called Guy Fawkes Night or Bonfire Night.

Например, картинку с чучелом или куклой с подписью - The dummy is called a Guy; портрет короля Джеймса I - King James I; treason -измена; рисунок, изображающий взрыв, и подпись под ним - The Gunpowder plot и т.д.

TV Presenter: How do the British celebrate Guy Fawkes Night and when?

Natalie: Every year on the 5th of November British boys and girls take an old suit or an old pair of dad's trousers and stuff them with straw or newspapers. Children make a head (sometimes with a brightly coloured mask on it), put a hat on a dummy. This dummy is called a guy. Usually children use their guys to make money. They stand in the street and shout "A penny for the guy, mister?" When they collect enough money they go and buy fireworks.

As soon as it gets dark, everyone, children and adults, make a very big bonfire and burns the dummy or the guy on it. As the guy burn, fireworks are set off (показывается картинка) and everyone says a rhyme: Remember, remember The fifth of November, Gunpowder treason and plot. We see no reason Why gunpowder treason Should ever be forgot.

TV Presenter: Guy Fawkes Night is one of the most popular festivals in Great Britain. It is connected with the discovery of the Gunpowder Plot on the fifth of November in 1605. In 1605, King James I was on the throne and as he was a protestant, he hated Catholics. Guy Fawkes and his friends decided to do away with King James I and the members of Parliament who were making life difficult for Catholics.

Natalie: To carry out their plan, they took 36 barrels of gunpowder and brought them into the cellar, underneath the House of Lords. Guy Fawkes and his friends wanted to set off the gunpowder when the King opened a new session of Parliament on the fifth of November in 1605.

But as the group worked on the plot, they understood that some innocent people would be killed in the plot. One of the members sent an anonymous letter warning his friends to stay away from Parliament on the fifth of November. The warning letter reached the King.

TV Presenter: Oh, that's very interesting. I find your story about Guy Fawkes rather

exciting. And what happened to him after that?

Alice: After the king received the letter, the plot was discovered. In the early hours of the fifth of November, Guy Fawkes, who was hiding in the cellar with 36 barrels of gunpowder, was arrested and taken to the Tower of London. At the Tower he was tortured and his friends were arrested and killed later too. On the 31st of January, 1606, Guy Fawkes was hanged and then he was drawn through the streets of London behind a horse cart. Since then the dummy of poor Guy Fawkes is burnt every fifth of November on bonfires throughout Britain.

TV Presenter: Such a sad story about Guy Fawkes. His death was terrible! Well, I think Guy Fawkes was the leader of the plotters, wasn't he?

Natalie: Not at all. The leader of the plotters was Robert Catesby, but it was Guy Fawkes who was to become the most famous of them.

TV Presenter: It is so interesting! And why do British children often put a brightly coloured mask on a dummy (a guy)?

Natalie: It stands to reason as when Guy Fawkes was arrested he was wearing a mask.

TV Presenter: I see. And are there any other ceremonies that take place on the fifth of November in London?

Natalie: Certainly. Before each opening of Parliament the cellars where Guy Fawkes was captured are still searched. This search is traditionally done on the morning of the opening day or on the evening of November the 4th each year. This is a very spectacular ceremony.

TV Presenter: Really? How does it happen?

Alice: The ceremony begins with the arrival of the Yeomen of the Guard (лейб-гвардейцы, дворцовая стража) dressed in the traditional uniform of that time. The Yeomen come from the tower of London to the Princes chamber in the House of Lords, where they are given candle-lanterns and receive the order to search the cellars below the Houses of Parliament. The candle-lanterns are simply ritual, as the building has electric lightning, but everything should be done just as it was done almost four centuries ago.

Natalie: Sure. I'd like to add that the Yeomen search every corner to satisfy themselves that there are no gunpowder barrels or other modern devices to blow up the Houses of Parliament. After they are certain that all is well, a message is sent to the Queen. And then, the Parliament is to open a new session.

TV Presenter: Natalie and Alice, thank you very much for your very remarkable story about celebrating Guy Fawkes Night in Britain. I think our audience has learnt a lot about this fantastic festival.

Alice: We have to say that if you want to know more about this day, you can read our book "Guy Fawkes Night".
