Television

Television, also called TV, is one of our most important means of communication. It brings moving pictures and sounds from around the world into millions of homes.

The name "Television" comes from a Greek word meaning "far", and a Latin word meaning "to see", so the word "tele-vision" means "to see far".

About three-fourths of the 1,500 TV stations in the U.S. are commercial stations. They sell advertising time to pay for their operating costs and to make profit. The rest

are public stations, which are nonprofit organizations.

Commercial TV stations broadcast mostly entertainment programs because they must attract larger numbers of viewers in order to sell advertising time at high prices. These programs include light dramas called situation comedies; action-packed dramas about the lives of detectives, police officers, lawyers and doctors; shows featuring comedians, dancers and singers; movies; quiz shows; soap operas; and cartoons. Commercial TV also broadcasts documentaries and talk shows. Documentary is the dramatic but nonfictional presentation of information. It includes programs about people, about animals in faraway places; and about such issues as alcoholism, drug abuse and racial prejudice. On talk shows, a host interviews politicians, TV and movie stars, athletes and authors. There are also sport programs and brief summaries of local, national and international news. Advertising is an important part of commercial TV. Commercials appear between and during most programs. They urge viewers to buy different kinds of products, from dog food to hair spray, and from cars to insurance policies.

Public television focuses mainly on education and culture. There are programs on a wide range of subjects, from physics and literature to cooking and yoga. Public TV also broadcasts plays, ballets and symphonies as well as programs about art and history. Public TV attracts less viewers than commercial TV.

Приложение (аудирование) The Press in Britain and Elsewhere

It's common knowledge that newspapers which are published on a regular basis, usually daily or weekly, report the news; they also interpret events behind the news. In addition, newspapers give useful information, such as stock market prices, weather reports and the schedules for television programmes.

They are also a popular source of reading for entertainment. Together with other means of communication, such as radio, television, and magazines, newspapers form the media. Printed forms of the media, including newspapers and magazines, are also called "the press".

Newspapers treat the news in two different ways. Many newspapers combine the serious and the popular approach, but in the United Kingdom newspapers tend to use one or the other.

Both serious and popular newspapers can be further divided into daily or weekly (depending on how often they are published), morning or evening (depending on when they are published) and local, national, or, in a very few cases, international (depending on the area over which they are sold).

The British are believed to be the greatest newspaper readers in the world. They read newspapers at breakfast, on the bus or on the train when they go to work and on the way back home. A symbol of the British Press is Fleet Street — a street in London that used to be home of most British national newspapers. Fleet Street is conveniently situated on the north bank of the River Thames close to a number of large railway stations, which makes it easy to deliver the papers to the trains taking them around the country.

British daily papers are published from Monday to Saturday. The serious or quality papers such as The Times, The Guardian, The Financial Times, The Independent and The Daily Telegraph are for those who want to know about important happenings everywhere: both domestic news and foreign news. Compared with Russian papers, British quality papers are very thick.

Popular papers or tabloids, such as The Daily Mail, The Sun or The Daily Express make much easier reading and have a more general readership. Many popular papers run

strip cartoons and humorous drawings; a lot of them have a woman's page and readers' letters.
