Conference & Exh ibition:

Biomass for Energy, Industry and Climate Protection Palais des Congres, Paris, 17-21 October 2005

The 14th European Conference and Technology Exhibition on Biomass for Energy Industry and Climate Protection will take place in Paris from 17 to 21 October 2005.

It is the 14th edition of the European event, following the recent successful events in Amsterdam in 2002 and in Rome 2004. It is my great pleasure to invite you to Paris to take part in the biomass event of the year where you can explore what is new in the field, exchange views with colleagues you already know, find new friends to share your thoughts with and of course enjoy the atmosphere in the always lovely Paris.

The interest for biomass is growing around the world and all of you involved in the area are doing great efforts to further increase its use in different applications. Although the use of biomass has a long history in mankind new inventions are regularly coming up. Biomass is a wonderful energy carrier where the energy from the sun is stored. This process is of course the photosynthesis. Part of this process can be imitated and used to produce hydrogen from water using sunlight. This is one example where new innovations can be applied using existing processes in nature. It will take a long time until technologies like this will be commercial but we need to be eager and forward in order to find new solutions to enter the future of sustainable society.

In spite of all the positive matters around biomass we also need to acknowledge that there still are a number of challenges to overcome in the utilization of biomass. I am thinking of emissions of small particles and the relatively low energy content in the fuel, which in turn gives a high density in the transport of biomass. On the opposite side we see however a positive development using biomass to decrease carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels. Our knowledge in this matter is still not complete and we are looking forward to increase it over the years to come.

Biomass, like other renewable energies, is in focus when discussing how a sustainable society should be built. We tend, as we often do, to forget that biomass is widely used today in many parts of the world and that it was not that long ago when we in the so called western world used biomass extensively. In our rich easy-day living we can afford to discuss issues about public acceptance and public awareness and I think this is good because it will stimulate discussions on how to deploy new technologies in our energy future.

So, welcome to the conference, enjoy all the presentations, the Technology Exhibition and the spirit of the biomass area.

See you in Paris in October 2005
