The Second Renewable Energy Conference

. "ENERGY FOR FUTURE"

27-28 June 2005 Yerevan, Armenia

The First Renewable Energy Conference "Reality and Perspectives for Armenia" was held in June 2003 in Yerevan. Over 80 Armenian researchers, specialists, businessmen, policy makers and a number of participants from the USA,Italy, Germany and Georgia met to discuss the practice, technologies, policy and legislation tools from the standpoint of speeded up development of Renewable Energy in Armenia.

Armenia, being deprived of fossil fuel resources, is completely dependent on supplies from outside. This fact makes the development of non-fuel energy resources vitally important for the country. At the same time Armenia owns considerable energy resources as hydro, solar, wind and geothermal. The potential of hydro energy capacity to be utilized by new small HPPs is around 270 megawatt; the inflow of solar energy per square unit of surface is higher for around 70% than in Europe that every year doubles its solar energy utilization; the assessed wind potential is 400-450 megawatt. There are also good prospects for biogas and geothermal energy. The solar, hydrogen technologies (including Fuel Cell) are being researched, some are already commercialized.

This all makes us consider Renewable Energy as the important component while creating significant energy capacities to replace the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant by the year of its decommissioning in 2014.

We look optimistically in the future. Since the First Renewable Energy Conference in 2003 the situation is favorably changed, e.g. the Law on Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency was adopted; entering into force the Kyoto Protocol has emerged opportunity for the implementation of the Kyoto flexibility mechanisms in Armenia.

This Second Renewable Energy Conference is aimed at fostering of a larger cooperation of Armenian field actors with partners from all over the world in science, technology and applications in the renewable energy by employing international and local funding and investment opportunities.

You are cordially invited to attend this Conference to take advantage of meeting colleagues and potential partners, present your works, and discover new opportunities for collaboration.

We would be very much pleased having your share in the debate to formulate important decisions those involved for succeeding the Energy for Future, Better Energy for Better Future.
