Who Invented TV?

IV-VI классы

Read the text about the invention of television. For questions 1-6 choose the correct answer (a, b, c or d). Only one answer is correct.

Many countries say they invented television. Without a doubt, engineers in several countries developed various early ways of transmitting pictures. The early TV sets were big, heavy and the picture quality was poor. One of the first TV images was the famous cat Felix.

Electronic TV was launched by the BBC from Alexandra Palace in London in 1936. Unlike the previous mechanical systems, this was similar to today's TV pictures. The BBC system was developed by Marconi, the father of radio. Interestingly, Marconi's work also led to the development of radar.

As for the United States Philo T. Farnsworth, an American engineer, is most associated with the invention of TV. In 1926, he was trying to construct a TV receiver in the dining room of his Hollywood, California flat. According to his wife, although constant noises came from the experimental TV set, these were not as bad as the terrible smell that filled the rooms. The wife of the inventor was the first person to complain that television stank.

Farnsworth not only had problems with his wife. Since he had the curtains drawn on his house during the day to better see the experimental TV sets the neighbors and police thought that he was doing something illegal. The police came to his flat and although surprised by what they saw, they didn't send him to prison.

A few years later, the RCA Corporation put the ideas of Mr. Farnsworth and other scientists into development. They "officially" started television in the United States by broadcasting parts of 1939 New York World's Exhibition. This included a speech by President Franklin Roosevelt.

At the same time, in 1936, Germany televised the Olympics and Great Britain began regular programming for a few hours each day. In both cases, however, there were few people who had TV sets to watch these events. Later on as things picked up, new, less expensive TV sets were introduced with larger screens. When World War II came along (1939-1945), the development of TV stopped because during this all the countries started the production of war materials. Once the war ended, some 70 TV stations immediately went on the air. Since then things has improved quickly.
