In December 2006 the stele of the High priest of Amun Bakenkhonsu, a contemporary of Pharaoh Setnakht, was found in Luxor. This important monument was first published by M. Boraik with considerable inaccuracies in transliteration and translation. The author of the present paper gives his own translation and philological commentary on the text of the stele. Analysing and comparing the stele of Berenkhonsw with other sources of the XX dynasty (P. Turin 1879, verso I-II; Elephantine stele of Setnakht; P. Harris I) the author comes to the following conclusions: 1) the 4th year of Setnakht's reign is fictive and in fact corresponds to the 2nd year of his reign; 2) ) Setnakht began his struggle for the throne moving from the South, probably from Elephantine region where he was a military chief; 3) ) the Theban priesthood supported Setnakht in his efforts. Probably, the priests of Amun turned to him for help as to the nearest to Thebes military force, because they were afraid of social disorder which manifested itself with the destoying of statues in Thebes.

The persecution of South Arabian Christians by the Jewish king of Himyar Yosef As'ar Ath'ar in AD 523 is usually associated with the inhabitants of the oasis of Najrān. However, in the table of contents of the Syriac hagiographic work known as the «Book of the Himyarites» there are some references to the martyrs who suffered in Hadramawt from the same ruler. In one of those contexts the editor managed to restore the name of [Hajgareyn, which he proposed to identify with the town of al-Hajarān/al-Hajarayn localized in the lower reaches of the wādī Daw'an, in the western part of inland Hadramawt, and mentioned first by the Moslem scholar al-Hasan al-Hamdānī in the early 10th century AD. Another form of the same toponym, Hagarəупе, may be attested in a fragmentary Ethiopic inscription (RIE 195 II) originated in Marib and connected with the victorious campaign of the Aksumite king Kaleb against the king Yosef. Nevertheless in South Arabian epigraphic documents there is no mention of this town. Therefore Christian Robin tried to interpret Hagareyn/Hagarəупе as a transcription of the Sabaic common noun hgr-nhn the «two towns» and to identify it with Nashqum and Nashshan situated in the region of al-Jawf. The detailed analysis of the sources from the historical and linguistic points of view demonstrates that this identification can not be accepted. In all probability, in the early 6th century AD the town of Hagarayn/Hajarayn existed in Hadramawt and there was a Christian community in it.

ДАНДАМАЕВ M. А. — 2009 г.
The author presents documentary evidence about Ezida at Borsippa (I mill. BC), which was the temple of Nabû, the patron of writing and scribes' god. His shrines which bore the same name Ezida were also built in Babylon, Uruk, and some other cities of Babylonia and Assyria. As it is known, Ezida at Borsippa was destroyed in 484 BC after the suppression of a revolt against Xerxes, king of the Achaemenid empire. Therefore our information about the activities of this sanctuary comes mainly from private archives of Borsippa inhabitants who belonged to the city élite.

Two inscriptions excavated in Tanais in 1993 are published in the article. The first one was made during the reign of Queen Dynamis and is a dedication of a monumental construction connected with the sanctuary of Apollo. The second one is a decree (apparently dating back to the mid-1st c. BC) adopted by the proedroi of the council in honour of an unknown person, son of Mathianes. The latter might be apparently Mathianes, son of Zaidaros, who is mentioned on the gravestone (now in the Museum of Temryuk) put up by Queen Dynamia. He must have been close to the queen; judging from his name and patronymic, he was of Sarmatian origin.

During an excavation of the cemetery in Gorgippia in 1987 a representative collection of jewellery of the first centuries AD including adornments (6 finger-rings, two pairs of earrings, one odd ear-ring, a bead and three cylindrical collar decorations) and ritual objects (a golden plaque for funeral wreath and three golden indications) were found. These finds enrich our knowledge of jewellery used in Gorgippia in the Late Antiquity, show some traces of Roman influence and provide new evidence on the cult of Helios, Tyche, Dionysian deities and Roman emperors in Gorgippia.

The article is a historical analysis of a Greek inscription discovered in Zela, one of the cities in the Kingdom of Pontus. This epigraphical document was left by Polemo (king of Pon-tus, named in this inscription without the royal title) and dedicated to Caesar Augustus, called as his benefactor. The author supposes that the inscription appeared about 26 ВС, when Polemo I, made king of Pontus in 37 ВС by Marcus Antonius, was included into the list of Roman allies by Caesar Augustus, and once again, after Marcus Antonius, his first Roman patron, had to be declared king by the Roman emperor. This document is important from the point of view of Roman eastern policy and the attitude towards the client Greek states, their kings and dynasts. It also proves that the city of Zela was initially included into the Pontic state of the Polemonids, and Polemo I, who before the battle of Actium had lost his royal title as Marcus Antonius' friend, was trying to get it again and keep his throne with Augustus' help.

REBUILDING THE JERUSALEM TEMPLE: PAGAN, JEWISH AND CHRISTIAN CONCEPTIONS
MILLAR F. — 2008 г.
